Tuesday Message from St. Benedict Cathedral 9/14/21
The Creed: Science Cannot Define God
Many agnostics and atheists believe that if science cannot explain something, it does not exist.
Science seeks to explain all things in the natural world.
Even though God is behind all things in the natural world, he is not one more "created thing" in the world.
He is not a thing or a created being.
Take a look at what science can explain about the existence of God:
FR. GODFREY'S HOMILY
St. Benedict Cathedral
The great prophet Isaiah places perfect words in our mouths: The Lord God is my help.
When afraid or angry or anxious, the Lord God is my help.
When attacked or ignored or depressed, the Lord God is my help.
When addicted or confused, the Lord God is my help.
When stubborn or lost, the Lord God is my help.
When opinionated or disrespected, the Lord God is my help.
When alone or surrounded, the Lord God is my help.
When exhausted or overwhelmed, the Lord God is my help.
When persecuted or bigoted, the Lord God is my help.
When sorrowful or exasperated, the Lord God is my help.
When rude or quick-tempered, the Lord God is my help.
And while it is good to remember that the Lord God is our help,
Saint James teaches us that a living faith acts.
When witnessing injustice or negligence, I will act in faith.
When seeing abuse or negligence, I will act in faith.
When doubting or trying to cope, I will act in faith.
When encountering the poor or hungry, I will act in faith.
When answering children or greeting another, I will act in faith.
When correcting a spouse or enduring another’s worries, I will act in faith.
When caring for the sick or whispering to another, I will act in faith.
When tempted or arrogant or impolite, I will act in faith.
When offended or foolish or unkind, I will act in faith.
When hobbled by no vision or tempted by apathy, I will act in faith.
Yes, the Lord God is our help and living faith acts.
And then we hear Jesus’ tough question: Who do you say that I am?
When feeding a sick neighbor, He is the Christ.
When speaking about other human beings, He is the Christ.
When remembering the dead with reverence, He is the Christ.
When grandparenting with faithful joy, He is the Christ.
When telling others how to live, He is the Christ.
When considering decisions about the sanctity of life, He is the Christ.
When losing my temper, He is the Christ.
When making important decisions, He is the Christ.
When engaging with politics, family, community, He is the Christ.
When given to self-will, conceit, greed, or entitlement, He is the Christ.
Brothers and sisters in Christ, the Word of God speaks to us on this 20th anniversary of September 11, on Grandparents’ Day, on this plain Sunday in Ordinary Time with so many difficulties swirling around our world.
Let’s remember God’s word. The Lord God is our help. We must act in faith. And Jesus, our help and our courage, He is the Christ, the anointed One, the One who carried the Cross so that we might have life.
May His selfless service help humble us always, so that our faith and our actions might always and everywhere give Him glory and honor.
