Flannery O'Connor: A Good Man is Hard to Find
Bishop Robert Barron: Flannery O'Connor
This is the story that is generally regarded as Flannery O’Connor’s masterpiece.
Moody, suspenseful, darkly comic, violent, and brimming with spiritual wisdom, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” is a brilliant showcase of O’Connor’s distinctive artistry.

POPE FRANCIS: REJOICE AND BE GLAD
IN CONSTANT PRAYER
156. The prayerful reading of God’s word, which is “sweeter than honey” (
119:103) yet a “two-edged sword” (
4:12), enables us to pause and listen to the voice of the Master. It becomes a lamp for our steps and a light for our path (cf.
119:105). As the bishops of India have reminded us, “devotion to the word of God is not simply one of many devotions, beautiful but somewhat optional. It goes to the very heart and identity of Christian life. The word has the power to transform lives”.
Fr. Godfrey's Homily
OT 27C 2019
St. Benedict Cathedral
For over thirty years, he has been a source of laughter to me. His clever wit is more instantaneous than anyone I know. And when my friend Fr. Joe
has been particularly successful in making some outrageous connection, once the laughter softens, he just looks at me and says, “What?” As if it’s normal or common to be able to be that funny. Do something amazing and then pretend there’s nothing to it. “What?”
Whether we are moving mountains or just fulfilling our construction work for the Kingdom, we have to believe that those good gifts, abilities, and responsibilities come from our Father in heaven. When we are able to move the mountains that divide us or when we’re able to restore hope to a despairing friend, then we must know that that’s God’s work. And knowing that makes us humbly, gratefully generous.
My brothers and sisters in Christ, as we celebrate the goodness of God on this Respect Life Sunday, on this Stewardship Renewal Sunday, on this first Sunday in October dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary — let’s take some time to acknowledge our own gifts from God, asking for guidance to use them all well. What I struggle to do, so many of you make look easy. But every one of us — every single one — has gifts to share that astound others. And those gifts, meant to be shared, are divine gifts. Let’s use them all for good and keep growing in our generosity, our stewardship, our blessings. And then, let’s just ask, “What?”
