Fr. Godfrey's Homily
Lent 04A 2020
St. Benedict Cathedral
“Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It’s been a month since my last confession. And these are my sins: I fought with my brothers and sisters and didn’t listen to my mom and dad.” If I had a dollar for every time I said those words, well, I couldn’t pay off our debt, but we could have a nice dinner someday! Almost every month, the same two sins. I had to be healed of the same thing multiple times.
The man born blind is healed of his blindness. Imagine the surprise and maybe disappointment of having visions in your head of that building or her office or his face and then seeing it all the first time. But the man born blind had to be healed of his blindness a second time, too: “the one speaking with you is he.” Now he really knew how to see.
Brothers and sisters in Christ, we are healed of our blindness repeatedly too. Whether it’s blindness to God’s goodness, blindness to hope, or blindness to another’s compassion, we keep being healed of our blindness. And that regularly-renewing ability to see, and to see Christ in particular, is what our seeing is all about. Today, in the darkness of these most uncertain days, let’s ask courageously to be healed of all our blindness again and to see the mercy of God in the midst of all the suffering and unknown around us. Lord God, let us see!
