Fr. Godfrey's Homily
OT 28A 2020
St. Benedict Cathedral
Tonight, for the first time in 82 days, my younger brother John will sleep in his own bed at home. His recovery from Covid-19 is a story punctuated with miracles. A few weeks ago when I visited him, he said, “Mimi [our sister] keeps saying that my recovery is amazing. I don’t see why it’s amazing.” I responded, “Because you didn’t see you lying in that hospital bed!” He’s just taken one day at a time. But we’re gradually recounting the miracles for him!
The Lord of heaven and earth has prepared a banquet and we, his servants, each one different from the other, have gathered. Miracles! Do we understand our task of drawing others to the celebration? Surely, we can share the miracles of Christ with others!
But we’re also called to clothe others with the garment of salvation. Like the white First Holy Communion dress or the wedding dress or the white garment under my vestments or the pall that covers a coffin, we are called to cover our brothers and sisters, naked in sin, with the light of Christ Himself. Are we spreading the miracles? That, indeed, is our vocation, our call, our work along with clothing the world in the grace of Christ’s presence. Let’s go!
